Transfusion confusion: Blood transfusions for RVNs

Veterinary Nursing | ECC | 63 mins

The veterinary nurse plays a key role in the preparation and administration of blood products to our hospitalised patients, and caring for these patients throughout and after their transfusion. In this webinar we’ll chat through the common blood products used in practice, and their indications and contraindications; what makes the ideal blood donor, how to perform a blood donation, and why veterinary nurses are vital to the donation process. We’ll also walk through preparing, calculating and administering transfusions, as well as what to monitor, how to spot the signs of a transfusion reaction, and what to do if you suspect one.

Laura Jones

RVN & VTS (Small Animal Internal Medicine)

show
Laura became an RVN in 2010 and has been working in referral practice as an internal medicine nurse since 2015, becoming a veterinary technician specialist in small animal internal medicine in 2019. After completing her VTS, Laura created 'Veterinary Internal Medicine Nursing', a social media page and podcast that provides accessible CPD for veterinary nurses passionate about internal medicine. She lectures internationally, has contributed to various peer-reviewed journals, and runs the Medical Nursing Academy, a learning platform for nurses interested in medicine.  Most importantly, Laura is still a practising referral medicine RVN and loves nothing more than giving great care to her patients - and helping other nurses do the same.
