I too are seeing alot of dystocia cases. I find them distressing but not as in not being able to do what the dog needs but the financial constraints of the owners. Once we know financially where we are at then all steam ahead.
I always feel like in any whelping cases the owner has let down their pet so I always think I am not going to let the bitch down. So I try to be positive and think its not her fault but she needs my help and that is how I remain positive and so far so good its working.
I have witnessed diazepam and phenobarb and when that has been unsuccessful a propofol CRI and if CRI of propofol is not the preferred choice then dexmedetomidine or some clients decided on euthanasia.
Previously I have always been taught that dexmedetomidine is a bad choice as it masks the seizure. Although as a last resort I have witnessed vets use it.
Under instruction at the practice I am at we use diazepam and ketamine intravenously. It usually has a good effect although the recent two ive been apart of we did fully GA them.
