I think a much more humane approach to staff would be to let them get the owner to sign a form promising to pay, and then deal with it later. All not paid up front C sections should be with spay included.
That way the bitch wins twice
    The puppies get a chance
The owner might pay if the puppies are sold

If we do not spay at the time, the bitch may well end up back somewhere else in a short space of time with the same well – rehearsed sob story.

I have had ONE breeder in a long and inglorious career arrive with bitch in whelp, not too far gone, with appropriate wads of cash in hand. I did not know what to think or even do I have become so programmed to have a bit of a row. All was well except for the swimmers and clefts…which they elected to put down on the spot
So to expect or demand that breeders do this is to think they may all be capable of a PhD or being a test -pilot or even reading and writing.
We need to worry about overstretched burnt out cynical staff more than we worry about idiot breeders.

If not obv caused by an obstruction then poss some sort of muscle issue. For some reason they are stretching rather than pushing food along.

Data sheet also contraindicated to use for pregnant and lactating bitch but i have yet to work in a gp practice that does not.
I believe that there is some thought that Nsaids affect microvascualture to an extent that healing of gut may be compromised.

I have had to use nsaid as a rescue pain relief after fb enterotomy on a dog that was full of morphine. Worked well.

Years ago we felt no such qualms and i dont perceive any difference in outcomes. But this scenario could do with some real evidence and a meta analysis.

I have been lucky and never had an anaphylactic reaction to IV VitK but very low case load. The next one may be the one!

In hospitalised patients where they have a lot of V+ such as the pancreatitis cases, I have had better success with ondansetron than maropitant BUT they are likely to already have maropitant on board. I have not tried just ondansetron on its own. Is using them both maybe more effective than just one or the other?? Should we consider using all 3 medications to cover all bases in the very sick cases?

Wow, I think I learned 10 things there! I feel there is a move to trying an anti emetic so the dogs are not sick in the owners car on the way home as much as anything, and we feel sorry for them. I have not done it, but was thinking about it as being kind to both dog and owner and I won’t now.

    Great topic!
    1. would transplanting faeces from a skinny dog help an obese one. There certainly seems to be some evidence from humans but I am not sure of how good it is.
    2. would transplanting faeces into a dog with chronic GI disease have the potential to precipitate something other than the effect you are looking for.
    3. how would you rule out potential pathogens and still have a fresh viable population?
