Lesson 6: Renal disorders

LESSON NOTES

Lesson Synopsis

Renal diseases are some of the most common patients admitted to the hospital. There is also a lot we can do to support these patients – it’s not just 3 days of IV fluids, and then rechecking renal parameters! This week we’ll discuss the differences between chronic kidney disease and acute kidney injury, as well as the diagnostics, treatment and nursing care requirements for these patients.

Learning Outcomes

  • To understand the difference between chronic kidney disease and acute kidney injury
  • To appreciate the different diagnostic tests performed on these patients, and why
  • To be able to plan nursing care for patients with renal disorders
