‘Chronic Hepatitis in Dogs: Copper, Corticosteroids and Clinical Uncertainty’
Thursday 26 March 2026 @ 19:00 (UK/London time)
Chronic hepatitis is a common yet often frustrating liver disease in dogs, frequently idiopathic and challenging to manage. While hepatic copper accumulation is a key contributing factor, many cases lack a clear underlying cause. Immune-mediated mechanisms are often suspected but remain poorly defined, creating uncertainty around diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis. This session takes a practical, evidence-informed approach to canine chronic hepatitis, focusing on how these cases present in practice, how to interpret histopathology and copper findings, and how to determine when inflammation is clinically significant to guide treatment decisions.
Emphasis will be placed on treatment decision-making: when copper matters, when immunosuppression is justified, and how to manage cases that fall into the diagnostic grey zone.
Scott Kilpatrick (Internal Medicine Specialist) graduated from Edinburgh Vet School in 2007. He completed his internal medicine residency in 2016 after finishing his Masters in the pathogenesis of canine liver disease. In 2023, he was awarded Fellow of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (FRCVS) for his meritorious contribution to clinical practice. He currently works as an internist at WAVES Veterinary Hospital in Victoria, BC.
