Good question. So for dogs we can be considering paracetamol alongside a NSAID and possibly adding in Gabapentin too if necessary/appropriate for the type of pain the patient is experiencing. Paracetamol is toxic to cats so alongside a NSAID we could carefully consider transmucosal Buprenorphine if necessary or Gabapentin (again if appropriate).
It’s often a judgement call too….would a patient feel better staying in the clinic with you on 4 hourly IV methadone for example, or at home with its home comforts and owner on oral analgesia?
