Well my introduction into veterinary nursing came late for me after a varied and exciting career in banking! Yes banking… Prior to starting as a student vet nurse, I worked for the Royal Bank of Scotland as a Risk Strategy Manager for a number of years. As random is that sounds, it really did set me up well for tasks such as ‘forward planning, project management and strategy planning’.
I attended Edinburgh College for my Veterinary Nurse training whilst working full time at the Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies in Edinburgh. This really provided a great basis for great academic teaching from Edinburgh College and working with some of the best clinical scholars in the UK at the University. I really enjoyed my time there and learned so much, not to mention making so many great friends.
Upon graduating as an RVN, I started working as an OOH ECC nurse for VetsNow in Glasgow. My first week was stressful to say the least, but I quickly settled in to the life of an ECC nurse and I had a great work buddy who really helped me. I really enjoyed the OOH and ECC cases and after just a shirt time progressed to a Senior nurse role, probably supported by my banking experience and took over managing one of the night teams, which was really great and an amazing team.
After a short time away from work, I returned to a day time role working as a rotational nurse on the referral side which involved working through medicine, ECC, oncology, surgery and imaging. This was slightly different from my previous role, but I was again lucky enough to also take on a support role to the Head of Clinical Nursing at VetsNow one day a week.
Since then, I took a career break and now I am working full time for vtx from home and combining all my clinical skills and experience with my past experience of business management to help support and deliver the aims of vtx to the veterinary profession and our vtx community. I hope to start doing some more clinical work again soon once we are into the next phases of lockdown release.
